The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Origin Bancorp is benefiting from the “Optimize Origin” initiative, which is improving productivity, product delivery, efficiency, balance sheet optimization, and employee engagement while supporting a stronger cultural and operating platform. Its 2Q26 results showed a 21bp sequential NIM increase to 3.92%, deposits of $8.7B up 7% Y/Y, and an ROA of 1.36%, alongside improving asset quality and a low-cost funding mix with 55% floating-rate loans. The franchise also has attractive growth exposure across Texas and the Southeast, with 27 banker hires through 2Q26, expanding DDA nearly $200M, and meaningful capital returns through a higher dividend and share repurchases, all reinforcing a positive fundamental outlook.

Bear case

Origin Bancorp is facing a muted fundamental backdrop as efficiency gains are likely to slow with about $10M of additional production spending, limiting near-term operating leverage despite the ratio improving toward the ~60% level. Its revenue mix remains heavily spread-dependent, fee income is only around 16-17% of total revenues and is expected to rise just mid-single digits in FY26E, while mortgage banking should be softer with 30Y mortgage rates near 7%. Credit, funding, and regulatory risks also temper the outlook, including a $61M unrealized securities loss, slightly higher-than-peer funding costs, and an estimated $4.0-$4.5M annual revenue headwind if the Durbin Amendment takes effect in mid-2027 after assets stayed above $10B in 1Q26.
