The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

OFG Bancorp is supported by strong fundamental momentum, having delivered two strong quarters in a row, with improving net interest margin expectations and benign credit trends helping lift consensus and earnings estimates. Its Puerto Rico franchise benefits from a low-cost deposit base, stable government and customer deposits, and a digital-first strategy that is gaining traction, while nonperforming loans improved to 0.81% of total loans from 1.47% in 1Q26 and TCE/CET1 remained solid at 10.7% and 13.8% at the end of 1Q26. Structural tailwinds from federal recovery funds, onshoring investment, and a resilient Puerto Rico economy should support organic growth, fee income from wealth management and mortgage banking, and disciplined capital returns despite some modest pressure from deposit repricing.

Bear case

OFG Bancorp is facing a negative fundamental setup because competitive pressure from larger Puerto Rico banks, softer market-share gains, and the risk of weaker island funding dynamics could constrain growth. Although core deposits rose 4% Y/Y in 1Q26, roughly $500M of government deposits already left the balance sheet and another $600M could roll off, while the $2.8B securities book carried a $38.6M unrealized loss and is expected to see NIM compression. Even with a solid Puerto Rico economy, management’s own outlook points to flattish NII, PPNR near 2.86% in FY26E, and slightly lower profitability as expense growth and deposit outflows offset otherwise stable revenue trends.
