The case for and against

Updated Jul 21, 2026

Bull case

Olin is a well-established company with a unique dual identity as the largest chlor-alkali producer and a leading ammunition manufacturer in the US. Despite some challenges such as production outages and supply chain disruptions, Olin's EBITDA and sales are expected to improve due to rising caustic soda prices in North America and strong demand in high-margin applications. While there are still risks to consider, such as competition and volatile input costs, Olin's disciplined approach to capacity expansion and focus on cost reduction should help support its financial performance and potential for long-term growth.

Bear case

Olin is facing several headwinds as it navigates a highly competitive market for its chlor-alkali products, with raw material costs remaining a significant concern. The company's "value over volume" commercial model for its core CAPV business may eventually support stronger earnings upside, but optimizing asset footprint and cost structure will be a multi-year process. Additionally, the company’s heavy turnaround schedule for 2026 and potential for intensified competition in the merchant chlorine market could continue to impact profitability. Despite the potential for a tighter caustic soda market, we do not see significant upside to the company's current valuation and maintain a Hold rating on the stock.
