The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Onto Innovation is supported by strong secular demand in semiconductor process control, as GenAI-driven WFE growth, rising HBM/CoWoS intensity, and the shift to gate-all-around logic expand the need for higher-precision inspection and metrology. Its Dragonfly and Atlas platforms are core differentiators, with advanced packaging revenue on track to grow 80% this year, advanced nodes expected to grow about 35% in 2026, and backlog and customer adoption providing unusual visibility into 2027. Financially, gross margin improved to 57.0% in 2Q26 and operating margin recovered to 30.0%, while a net-cash balance sheet, recurring software and services revenue, and limited China exposure strengthen the company’s resilience and upside.

Bear case

Onto Innovation is challenged by a highly cyclical business model, with a beta of 2.4 and revenue and margins that are very sensitive to demand swings, leaving the stock prone to amplified volatility and sharp drawdowns. Although China exposure is only about 4% in F2Q26 and management expects it to stay near current levels in 2026 and beyond, the larger risk is weakening advanced packaging spending, delayed panel-level packaging and silicon photonics adoption until 2028 and 2030, and growing competition from KLA and ASML. Semilab adds only about $90-100 million of annualized revenue versus a cyclical headwind in 2026 from weaker EV demand, while concentrated customer exposure to TSMC, Samsung, and Intel leaves earnings vulnerable to any capex cuts or fab-space constraints.
