The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

OppFi is viewed favorably because the pending BNCCorp acquisition should outweigh near-term pressure from competitive encroachment by earned wage access and other high-cost line-of-credit products. The deal, announced on 4/29 for $131M cash/stock and expected to close in 4Q26, would make OppFi a nationally chartered BHC and lower funding costs through deposits, supporting geographic and product expansion. Management reiterated 25% accretion to adjusted EPS in year one (2027), 40% in year two (2028), and 50% in year three (2029), while also guiding toward run-rate EPS of about $3 by the end of 2028.

Bear case

OppFi is facing a deteriorating fundamental setup as originations fell 7% in 1Q and more than 9% in 2Q, while management cut 2026 guidance to $600M-$625M of revenue and $1.34-$1.51 of adjusted EPS after missing expectations. Competitive pressure is eroding its core installment product as borrowers favor lower monthly payments from EWA, longer-duration loans, and lines of credit, and the delayed rollout of its new LOC product adds execution risk and reduces visibility. Profitability is also under pressure from a 52% net charge-off rate, a 410-basis-point shortfall in portfolio yield versus expectations, heavy dependence on FinWise, and heightened regulatory and model-risk exposure.
