The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Ovid Therapeutics is viewed favorably because its lead asset OV329 is a redesigned, next-generation GABA-AT inhibitor that preserves vigabatrin’s validated anti-seizure mechanism while aiming to eliminate the retinal toxicity and gram-scale dosing that limited the older drug, with Phase 1 showing clean tolerability across 68 volunteers and no ophthalmologic findings. The company also has meaningful commercial upside in ultra-orphan epilepsy markets such as TSC, infantile spasms, and refractory focal onset seizures, where management and analysts cite peak revenue potential exceeding $600M and, for TSC/IS combined, more than $700M given differentiated pediatric pricing. Near-term value is further supported by multiple catalysts, including an OV329 photosensitivity readout expected near YE/early 2027, a dose-confirmatory focal seizure study slated for completion in 2H27, and cash runway into 2029, all of which reduce execution risk and keep optionality from OV4071 and soticlestat in play.

Bear case

Ovid Therapeutics is a speculative biotech whose value depends heavily on unproven epilepsy assets, while historical precedent for vigabatrin shows a boxed warning and REMS burden for permanent vision loss that can affect ~30-80% of patients and helped limit Sabril peak sales to about $220M in 2017 despite high pricing. The investment case is further weakened by the fact that 30-40% of patients remain drug-resistant, existing adjunctive ASMs can produce adverse events in up to ~70-95% of extension-study patients, and Ovid still faces meaningful risks of clinical failure, safety signals, regulatory delays, competition, and financing risk until cash flow positive. Although 2Q26 net loss was $0.08 per share, cash and marketable securities of $169.8M only fund operations into 2029, and the DCF framework assigns just 10% and 30% approval probabilities to OV888 and OV329, underscoring limited conviction in pipeline monetization.
