The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Palo Alto Networks is benefiting from a broader platform shift that has moved it beyond a hardware-centric firewall vendor into a diversified security software leader, with network security still about 70% of revenue while higher-growth areas such as SASE, XSIAM, Chronosphere, and identity now represent more than 35% of revenue. The company’s “Mythos moment” has accelerated platformization, delivering a record 220 net new platformization deals and 120% NRR among platformized customers, while its SASE and AI-security offerings are gaining traction as agentic traffic drives multiple times more inspection volume and over $400M in FY26 TCV wins. With management targeting $20B in NGS ARR by 2030 and analysts seeing FY27 pro forma revenue growth around 17% and FCF margins above 35%, the expanding mix, cross-sell potential, and structural AI tailwinds support a constructive fundamental outlook.

Bear case

Palo Alto Networks is facing a weaker fundamental setup as macroeconomic deceleration can slow global IT and security spending, while slower SaaS/cloud adoption, longer sales cycles, and greater quarterly volatility can pressure revenue visibility. Its competitive position is also challenged by a dynamic cybersecurity landscape where faster-moving rivals and lower-priced solutions can erode pricing power and compress margins, especially outside the traditional firewall market. In addition, dependence on M&A and usage-based AI security contracts raises execution risk, with reported FY26 core growth slowing to 13.0% in FQ4’26 from 14.1% in FQ3’26 and FY27 guidance implying a step down to 14.5% pro forma revenue growth.
