The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Private Bancorp is attractive because it is still generating new client relationships while deposits rose 7.1% YTD, or 8% excluding brokered balances, and core deposit costs fell 14bp over the past two quarters, supporting a stronger funding mix. Even with net loan growth in a temporary lull and 2026 shaping up as a modest growth year, the bank is preserving pricing discipline, producing strong loan originations, and posting solid profitability with TCE/TA up 15bp YTD to 10.5% and CET1 up 99bp to 13.6%. Its above-peer return profile, improving capital optionality, and recent Nasdaq uplisting also strengthen the outlook by supporting a premium valuation and creating room for buybacks, a dividend policy change, or M&A.

Bear case

Private Bancorp is facing pressure from weakening fundamentals, as repeated risks around deteriorating asset quality, higher deposit funding costs, and softer loan demand point to margin compression and slower, less profitable growth. Noninterest income also weakened materially, with fee income falling to $1.0M from $1.9M in 1Q and net gain on sale income declining to just $4K from $907K in the prior period, signaling reduced earnings support from core activities. At the same time, noninterest expenses rose to $16.9M from $15.7M in 1Q, reflecting higher professional services and uplisting-related costs that further strain profitability.
