The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Plumas is attractive because 2Q operating EPS of $1.40 beat both estimates and, despite loan payoffs, core profitability remained strong with pre-provision net revenue of $14.2 million and NII of $26.0 million. Its franchise also showed deposit momentum, with balances up $110.3 million q/q or 24.9% LQA, supported by a high-quality funding base that is 46% noninterest-bearing and should help sustain spread income even as NIM normalizes to slightly above 5.00% in 3Q. The positive outlook is further reinforced by solid capital, including a 15.8% CET1 ratio and active buybacks, which give management flexibility to return capital while pursuing organic growth and opportunistic M&A.

Bear case

Plumas is facing a negative fundamental setup because its earnings power is exposed to a narrow geographic footprint in California and Nevada, where any slowdown in macro conditions, real estate, or business confidence could quickly pressure results. Approximately 62% of loans are commercial real estate-related, leaving the balance sheet vulnerable to a weakening CRE market, while recent credit metrics worsened as NPAs rose 60 bps to 1.56% and NPL coverage fell to 84% from 136%, signaling thinner protection against future losses. Although deposits were up 25% and loans rose 3%, those gains were helped by a $41 million reclass and are offset by modest loan growth, wire-fraud-related expense, and persistent M&A execution risks.
