The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Pentair is supported by a resilient, high-quality water portfolio with about 80% exposure to residential and commercial water treatment applications and roughly 70% replacement sales, which helps sustain above-GDP growth even when Pool demand is uneven. Its outlook is further strengthened by management’s 2026-2028 targets for MSD% organic growth, 28% ROS by 2028, and about $2.7 billion of cumulative FCF, backed by a capital-light model, high-teens ROIC, and strong liquidity with 1.7x net leverage as of 1Q26. The combined $1 billion water quality management platform, Manitowoc Ice cross-selling, and Flow and Water Solutions productivity initiatives should expand margins, while 50 consecutive years of dividend increases reinforce financial discipline and shareholder returns.

Bear case

Pentair is facing a deteriorating fundamental backdrop as 2Q sales are expected to fall to about $930M, down roughly 17% y/y, with adjusted EPS cut to about $1.12 from prior guidance of $1.47-$1.50 as Pool channel destocking proves far worse than management expected. The Pool segment is especially concerning because the company now estimates about $170M of 2Q sales pressure and more than $150M of 2026 income impact, while elevated rates, persistent inflation, and depressed new pool construction suggest a slow recovery even after inventories normalize. The outlook is further weakened by a substantial 2026 guide reset—sales shifting from +2%-4% growth to a (4%)-(7%) decline, adjusted EPS dropping to $4.60-$4.80, EBITDA falling to about $1,050M, and the surprise CFO resignation undermining confidence in execution.
