The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

ProQR Therapeutics is attractive because its AX-0810 and AX-0811 programs now have early proof-of-concept and a biologically compelling NTCP-modulation thesis supported by human genetics, mechanistic bile-acid data, and encouraging preclinical efficacy. The company reported favorable safety with no SAEs to date, while the platform showed target engagement in healthy volunteers and meaningful improvements in liver bile acids and cholestasis scores, strengthening confidence that hepatic bile-acid reduction could translate into clinical benefit. Although the $50 mm offering at $1.81/share and $9.2 mm private placement increased dilution, the financing extends the runway from mid-27 into 2H28, supporting continued clinical progress through the January 2027 readout and mid-2028 interim analysis.

Bear case

ProQR Therapeutics is burdened by persistent cash burn and a likely need to raise additional debt or equity to fund research, regulatory work, and sales infrastructure, which could dilute shareholders or come with restrictive covenants. Its outlook is further weakened by uncertainty over clinical validation, FDA and EMA regulatory outcomes, and the possibility that future Phase Ib/II/III results or narrower label approvals will limit commercial potential. In a highly competitive RNA medicines landscape, where larger rivals have greater resources and stronger development experience, the company also faces patent risk, possible legal expenses, and the chance that new treatments could render its pipeline obsolete.
