The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Roper Technologies is attractive because it combines a decentralized portfolio of 30 niche businesses with a high-quality mix of software and network assets, as over three-fourths of revenue comes from software products and more than two-thirds is recurring or reoccurring. In 2Q26, it delivered a modest operating beat, 118% free cash flow conversion, 11% year-over-year FCF growth, and 6% organic growth, while raising 2026 cash EPS guidance to $22.15-$22.30 and organic growth to about 6%. The outlook is further supported by improving signs in DAT, Neptune, and Deltek, plus strong margin expansion, AI-driven product momentum, and continued disciplined capital allocation through buybacks and future M&A.

Bear case

Roper Technologies is viewed negatively because its premium valuation appears vulnerable if the market’s expectation for accretive M&A and durable software multiple expansion proves too optimistic, especially as management signals a shift from $1.2 billion of 2Q26 buybacks toward de-leveraging ahead of future acquisitions. Despite solid 2Q26 results — $2,109 million of revenue, 5% organic growth, and 38.7% adjusted EBITDA margin — growth was partly offset by nonrecurring revenue headwinds and segment margin pressure from inflation and mix shifts, while AI disruption remains an emerging risk to the company’s software-heavy model. The stock also trades at 14.7x 2027 EPS and 12.7x 2027 EV/EBITDA, both at meaningful discounts to peers, but the outlook remains constrained by slowing buybacks, prolonged M&A uncertainty, and a broader rotation away from high-quality compounders.
