The case for and against

Updated Oct 4, 2026

Bull case

Southside Bancshares is attractive because its Texas franchise is positioned in faster-growing markets like Dallas, Houston, Austin, Tyler, and Lufkin, while management can still capitalize on market disruption and consolidation. Fundamentally, earnings power is improving as the net interest margin rose 20 bp to 3.01% in 1Q26, deposits reached $6.9B, and the loan/deposit ratio of 72% leaves room for a more profitable loan mix. The company also combines efficient operations, mid-single-digit loan growth potential, predictable fee income, solid credit metrics, and excess capital that could support buybacks or M&A, making the outlook for long-term profitability favorable.

Bear case

Southside Bancshares is facing a cautious outlook because criticized assets remain elevated at 8.75% of loans in 1Q26, or $429M, driven largely by Austin multifamily construction and a new office credit migration to substandard, which raises the risk of further credit pressure if Texas conditions weaken. Although management expects resolutions over the next year and NCOs were only 12bp in 1Q26, the bank’s profitability is constrained by higher expenses, flattish revenue, and only modest PPNR at 1.55%, while the $10B-in-assets threshold threatens a potential $15M-$20M revenue hit. Even with possible NIM improvement from securities repricing, the shares also face M&A execution risk and an overhang from trading at only a slight discount to peers, limiting upside in a competitive Texas banking market.
