The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Charles Schwab is positioned to outperform because its core franchise is still compounding: 3Q26 adjusted EPS rose 29% year over year to $1.69, revenue hit a record $7.17B, and core net new assets increased 38% to a quarterly record of $190.4B. Its scale in client assets, leadership in RIA custody, and broadening wealth platform support durable organic growth, while record managed investing flows, 35% bank-loan growth, and stronger trading activity show clients are deepening their relationship with the firm. Although near-term NIM was softer at 3.04%, expense discipline, higher repurchase capacity, and improving client cash, AI-driven productivity, and monetization opportunities should sustain operating leverage and capital returns.

Bear case

Charles Schwab is vulnerable to a structurally slower earnings profile because its profits depend heavily on net interest income, cash sweep revenues, and funding costs, all of which can be pressured by either rising rates that trigger adverse client cash sorting or falling rates that reduce NII and NIM. Excluding the long/short tax advantage balances, transactional sweep cash fell about $12.5B sequentially to $429.5B while wholesale funding rose, highlighting weaker cash monetization even after record asset gathering and suggesting lower cross-cycle margins, slower interest-earning asset growth, and softer ROTCE. The company also faces meaningful downside from a major decline in capital markets, slower client asset growth, credit and cybersecurity risks, and a tightly regulated backdrop that could increase costs or constrain capital returns.
