The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Sea is well positioned by the combination of Shopee’s scale, Monee’s rapid expansion, and Garena’s durable cash generation, which together produced 2Q26 GAAP revenue of $7.8bn, up 48% y/y, with adj. EBITDA rising 11% y/y. Shopee’s 28% GMV growth to $38.3bn, improving ad monetization, and management’s raised expectation for >$1bn of full-year Shopee adj. EBITDA suggest the platform is converting heavy investment into better unit economics and a firmer margin floor. Meanwhile, Monee’s 59% revenue growth and 62% loan book growth, alongside Garena’s 15% bookings growth and Free Fire’s >100m average DAUs, provide diversified earnings support under Forrest Li’s tightly controlled voting power.

Bear case

Sea is viewed negatively because its core businesses remain exposed to macroeconomic uncertainty, geopolitical tension, foreign-exchange volatility, and intensifying competition across Southeast Asia and beyond. Although Shopee showed strong 1Q26 momentum with $4.5BN of revenue, +44% y/y, and a 12.1% take rate, the company still faces pressure from higher shipping subsidies, fierce rivals such as BABA and JD, and the challenge of sustaining scale benefits in a rapidly changing market. Garena’s hit-driven model adds earnings fragility, while Monee’s growth outlook does not offset the structural risks in e-commerce and gaming, leaving fundamental execution and profitability risks elevated.
