The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Sherwin-Williams is viewed favorably because its scale, dominant 4,800-plus store network, and strong pricing power should support 1.5-2x market growth through share gains, new stores, and AI infrastructure demand. Management sees no change to its FY26 guide, while the company’s high-quality model is expected to drive over 10% FY27 EPS growth through mid-single-digit topline gains, strong EBITDA leverage, and disciplined capital allocation. Its exceptional cash generation, with about 70% EBITDA conversion and roughly $3.4 billion of FY26 FCF after about $550 million of CapEx, also supports buybacks and bolt-on M&A while helping it outperform in choppy end markets.

Bear case

Sherwin-Williams is facing a weak demand backdrop as the hoped-for recovery in existing home sales has still not materialized, pressuring architectural coating volumes across its large stores and consumer-facing businesses. End markets in packaging and general industrial also remain soft amid broader macro weakness, which limits the pace of improvement in the performance coatings segment despite some strength in Auto Refinish and Protective & Marine. Although the company is positioned to benefit from an industrial recovery post Covid, the continued stall in construction recovery and muted end-market conditions support a cautious fundamental outlook.
