The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Sylvamo is supported by a favorable global cost position, large-scale low-cost mills, and a 21% North America UFS market share that benefits from industry consolidation, disciplined capacity rationalization, and stable-to-higher pricing. Its outlook is further strengthened by operating improvements that should add about $55mn of annual EBITDA, including Eastover’s 4Q26 paper machine speed-up, 1Q27 woodyard start, and warehouse expansion that should lower supply chain costs. Although North America volumes may decline in 2027 and Europe remains unprofitable until mid-2027 at the earliest, the company’s integrated fiber base, tariff-driven sourcing shift, and strong sustainability profile help offset secular paper demand decline and support earnings resilience.

Bear case

Sylvamo is burdened by weak end-market demand, with global UFS demand declining at a 0.4% CAGR between 2014 and 2019 and ongoing threats from imported product, which pressure volumes, pricing, and utilization. Its latest results also show operational fragility: Q1 2026 Adjusted EBITDA of $29mn missed estimates, Europe and Latin America underperformed, and rising energy, chemical, diesel, and freight costs are expected to persist. Although pricing and 2H improvement could help, the North American footprint alignment has widened to an $85mn headwind, and the business still faces heavy capital needs plus a disputed Brazilian contingent tax liability.
