The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

USA Today Co is supported by a faster digital mix, with same-store digital revenue representing 48% of total revenue in 1Q26 and management expecting a majority-digital business in 2026, while EBITDA and free cash flow are projected to grow double digits and free cash flow to rise for a fourth consecutive year. Its subscription engine is strengthening, as digital-only subscription revenue returned to growth, ARPU hit a record $10.47, and core platform ARPU reached $2,908, partly offset by a lower but improving customer count and better churn dynamics. Beyond the core business, the outlook is bolstered by high-margin AI licensing, commerce, and syndication opportunities, Palantir-enabled monetization improvements, and potential Google-related legal and regulatory catalysts that could further accelerate deleveraging from net debt of $883.8M.

Bear case

USA Today Co is facing deteriorating fundamentals as digital growth is not offsetting broader weakness, with total revenue of $536.3M missing estimates, down 8.3% Y/Y, and same-store trends decelerating sharply to -6.1% from -1.8% in 1Q26. Digital still represented only 47.4% of sales, while digital ads fell 9% Y/Y and monthly unique visitors dropped to 158M from 180M in 1Q26, underscoring severe pressure from the shift away from traditional search and lower programmatic traffic. Although operating cash flow and free cash flow remained positive at $35.4M and $19.6M, respectively, EBITDA margin slipped to 10.6%, and leverage, upcoming debt commitments, and dependence on weak local and SMB demand leave little room for error.
