The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

UFP Industries is supported by a rare combination of strong liquidity, disciplined capital allocation, and a clear growth pipeline, ending the quarter with $494M of net cash and roughly $9/share in cash value while management said the M&A pipeline is the best in several years. The April MoistureShield acquisition for $56M and the announced Berry Pallets deal for $20M add capacity and growth, while the company also cut full-year capital spending by $50M to $250M-$275M, preserving flexibility and supporting further deals or repurchases. Operationally, Deckorators remains a key upside driver, with a maintained $100M sales growth target for 2026, mid-teens 1Q decking sales growth, and improving Buffalo and Selma capacity suggesting margins can expand as backlog converts into higher volumes.

Bear case

  • UFP Industries is facing a fundamentally weaker near-term earnings profile, as 1Q EPS of $0.89 and EBITDA of $111M both fell short while sales declined 8% y/y on a 1% price drag and 7% organic volume decline.
  • The miss was driven by a “perfect storm” of ~$7M in medical claims, ~$3M of unabsorbed freight and energy inflation, and $19M of site-built gross profit erosion, while housing-linked demand remained choppy and residential stabilization was quickly reversed by severe weather, higher rates, and weaker confidence.
  • Although pass-through pricing, new capacity, acquisitions, and a still meaningful net cash position provide some support, the stock’s outlook remains negative because the company still needs several solid quarters for housing sentiment and margins to recover.
