The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Upwork is attractive because Q2 showed resilient operating leverage, with GSV of $966.4M roughly in line with expectations, revenue of $191.7M beating consensus by 0.9%, and adjusted EBITDA of $64.1M topping estimates by 11.4% with a 33.4% margin. Its bullish case is strengthened by fast-growing Business Plus, where GSV rose 174% y/y and AI Strategy & Consulting grew 51% y/y, plus improving monetization from paid search, where cost per new contract start improved 22% q/q and management plans to add $5-$10M in spend in the 2H26. The company also has credible long-term optionality from Lifted’s 25% y/y GSV growth pace in 2026, healthy enterprise pipeline momentum, and new AI-native distribution through the MCP server, all of which support deeper marketplace engagement and margin expansion.

Bear case

Upwork is facing a fundamental deterioration in its marketplace engine as active clients fell 4% y/y to 763,000 and remain more than 10% below peak 2023 levels, while GSV per active client only partly offset that weakness by reaching a record $5,230, up 5% y/y. AI-driven automation is eroding low-complexity work faster than expected, and management now sees the impact as undercounted but still severe, with AI-related GSV around a $330M run rate and job growth decelerating to 22%. On top of that, Google SEO and referral-traffic changes are creating a likely recurring acquisition headwind, prompting FY26 revenue guidance cuts to $730M-$750M and signaling limited visibility for durable top-line recovery despite higher-margin revenue mix gains.
