The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

USA Compression Partners is positioned to benefit from a structurally tight compression market, with strong utilization, rising pricing, and multi-year visibility as customers lock in capacity earlier because engine lead times have stretched to about 190-200 weeks. It has already contracted 50% of its 2027 deliveries and a mid-teens percentage of 2028 deliveries, while targeting 2-3% annual horsepower growth and roughly 500,000 HP additions by the end of 2030, supporting durable expansion. Financially, 1Q26 average revenue-generating utilization was 90.2%, average price reached a record $22.73/HP, leverage exited 2Q26 at 3.72x versus a 3.75x near-term target, and 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance remains $770-800MM.

Bear case

USA Compression Partners is viewed negatively because its 2Q26 Adj. EBITDA missed Street and RBC estimates by 1.3% and 1.5%, with weaker gross margin driven by higher opex costs, while incremental lube oil costs of about $1MM per month in 2H26 threaten further pressure on cash generation. The partnership also carries higher-than-average debt leverage among MLPs, making it vulnerable if declining commodity prices reduce producer activity, utilization, and rates, which could ultimately force a distribution cut in a downside scenario. Customer concentration, regulatory exposure, and acquisition execution risk add to the downside, because losing key customers or facing higher compliance costs could reduce revenues and cash available for distribution.
