The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Universal Technical is supported by resilient demand for skilled-trades and healthcare training, with new student starts rising 10.9% in the quarter and 3Q starts up 23% year over year at UTI, while Concorde’s revenue grew 11% year over year to $80.9 million. The company is also showing operational leverage in a high-fixed-cost model, as it expands campus capacity with Atlanta and San Antonio tracking ahead of plan and expects over $1.2 billion of revenue and about $220 million of adjusted EBITDA in FY29. Near-term investment is pressuring margins and free cash flow, but with cash of $170 million, demand still outstripping supply, and multiple growth catalysts in new campuses, programs, and employer partnerships, the fundamentals remain compelling.

Bear case

Universal Technical is facing a deteriorating near-term enrollment mix and execution risk, as High School starts in the September quarter are roughly 1,000 below plan despite leads rising 15%, implying weak conversion from a turnover-hit recruiting team. Management’s response has forced lower guidance, cutting full-year revenue to $893 million-$900 million from $905 million-$915 million, EBITDA to $100 million-$103 million from $114 million-$119 million, and free cash flow to ($20 million) to breakeven amid higher CapEx. Although Q2/26 revenue rose 6.7% to $221.4 million and starts increased 13.8%, EBITDA margin fell to 6.4% and operating income nearly disappeared, underscoring a high fixed-cost model and heavy ongoing growth spending.
