The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

VinFast Auto is viewed positively because its recent strategic transactions and founder support should reduce capital intensity, overhead, and cash burn while strengthening liquidity, including about $530 million from the manufacturing-operations sale and an approximately $400 million capital contribution. The company’s delivery momentum is also encouraging, with 58,577 EVs and 143,136 e-scooters delivered in the quarter, while July Vietnam EV deliveries of 21,781 units were roughly 90% higher than July 2025, supporting confidence in the at least 300,000-vehicle goal for 2026. Its outlook is further improved by expanding international sales, a 2027 EBITDA breakeven target in Vietnam, and growing exposure to e-scooter electrification and autonomous initiatives that could lift margins and long-term cash flow.

Bear case

VinFast Auto is facing a deeply challenged operating profile, as FY1Q26 revenue of $920.7 million missed the Street’s $1.00 billion estimate and gross margin fell to (73.6%), reflecting a $192.0 million free-charging revenue deduction, revenue deferrals, and NRV adjustments. Despite delivering ~58.6k EVs and maintaining strong Vietnam share, the company still posted operating income of ($910.7) billion and Non-GAAP Adj. EBITDA of ($783.0) million, underscoring that scale is not yet translating into profitability. Its outlook remains pressured by reliance on its majority shareholder for cash, competitive intensity from larger EV makers, and macro risks such as tariffs, export controls, and the path of interest rates.
