The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Viavi Solutions is viewed positively because its revenue mix is shifting toward higher-growth, higher-value markets, with Data Center and Aerospace & Defense now over two-thirds of NSE revenue and driving strong demand for lab, production, and field test products. Management’s increasing confidence in a multi-year upcycle is supported by early CPO/NPO shipments, stronger-than-expected 1.6T and OCS test adoption, and dominant positioning in merchant OCS test equipment, all of which should expand test content and share. Financially, 4Q26 revenue reached $443.1 million, up 53% year over year, while gross margin was 62.3% and NSE operating margin was 20%, reinforcing the case for rising earnings power as the business scales.

Bear case

Viavi Solutions is exposed to meaningful downside if supply chain constraints persist, since tight component availability and higher transportation costs can pressure both revenue growth and gross margins, forcing negative revisions. Its largest segment, NSE, is highly dependent on Telecom and Data Center capital spending, so weaker economic conditions, customer financial stress, or restrained network expansion could reduce demand and profitability, while the company’s 800G and 1.6T lab test opportunity may prove smaller than expected due to competition or pricing. On top of that, the highly profitable OSP anti-counterfeiting business has benefited from near-record demand, but that demand could cool as economies shift toward more cash-free behavior.
