The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Westlake is positioned to benefit from a vertically integrated model that combines commodity chemicals with higher-margin building products, which the market has not fully reflected in its valuation. Its HIP segment adds stability, supports margin expansion through pricing actions and cross-selling, and offers a long runway for accretive bolt-on M&A backed by balance sheet capacity, while the company’s ~$600M EBITDA improvement plan and Q2/FY26/FY27 EBITDA of $630M/$1.96B/$2.185B signal meaningful earnings upside. Despite near-term cost and demand headwinds in chemicals, solid order books, rising operating rates, low customer inventories, and strong infrastructure-linked demand in pipes, fittings, and siding/trim support a constructive fundamental outlook.

Bear case

Westlake is facing a weaker fundamental setup as 2026E/27E EBITDA estimates were cut to $1.71B/$1.864B from $1.935B/$2.061B, reflecting softer performance in both chemicals and HIP. Management’s Cologne PVC plant closure, planned for 1Q27, underscores high-cost European exposure and will carry about $205M of pre-tax charges, while weak regional demand, elevated energy and logistics costs, and Asian export competition keep operating conditions under pressure. At the same time, 3Q earnings are expected to decline q/q as polyethylene and PVC prices normalize, and HIP margins remain squeezed by diesel-driven freight inflation and residential housing weakness amid higher interest rates.
