The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Wintrust Financial is favored for its consistent peer-leading organic growth, with loans up 11.7% LQA, deposits up 15.1% LQA, and management still guiding to mid- to high-single-digit loan growth supported by strong pipelines and seasonal strength in premium finance. Its earnings power remains resilient despite modest NIM pressure, as NII still grew 3.2% LQ to $597.4M, fee income beat forecasts on wealth management and operating lease strength, and expenses came in below plan, supporting positive operating leverage. Credit quality is another key strength, with NPAs/TA improving to 26bp, NCOs declining to 10bp, and noncurrent loans at just 0.90% of total loans, reinforcing confidence in durable outperformance versus peers.

Bear case

Wintrust Financial is viewed negatively because its stronger fee income quarter was offset by rising core expenses, which increased 5.2% LQ to $402.7M and were driven by advertising, marketing, and salaries and benefits, while management still projects MSD cost growth this year. The company also faces meaningful balance-sheet and earnings risks from approximately one-third of loans tied to commercial real estate, higher AOCI losses to -$367mm in 1Q26 from -$296mm in 4Q25, and ongoing sensitivity to interest-rate movements, credit deterioration, and regulatory pressure. Even with ROTE at 14.9% above the 13.6% forecast and TBV per share at $89.90, its active acquisition strategy, competitive banking environment, and exposure to a prolonged recession weaken the fundamental outlook.
