The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

American International Gr is supported by improving investment income, as higher new money yields should continue to aid the core fixed income portfolio and private equity results are expected to normalize from 2Q. Its general insurance franchise is showing clear underwriting momentum, with underwriting income up 10% to $686 million, Global Personal NPW up 7% to $1,803 million, and North America Commercial NPW up 9% to $3,125 million while combined ratios improved. Management’s re-affirmed spring 2025 investor day goals also reinforce the outlook, including 20%+ operating EPS CAGR, a sub-30% GI expense ratio by end of 2027, and $3 billion of capital generated through 2027.

Bear case

American International Gr is viewed negatively because its underwriting profile remains vulnerable to volatility, with International Commercial combined ratio worsening to 91.3% in the second quarter and Lexington Property retention cut by 9 percentage points as management retreats from a competitive market. Although Global Commercial net premiums written rose 9% year-over-year and North America commercial also increased 9%, those gains were partially offset by rate pressure, catastrophe losses tied to the Middle East conflict, and weaker margins in parts of the portfolio. The outlook is also constrained by investment and regulatory risk, including continued equity exposure to Corebridge and uncertainty from state, rating agency, and capital requirements, which can amplify bottom-line volatility.
