The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Deere is well positioned for outperformance because FQ3 EPS of $5.10 topped estimates and management lifted 2026 net income guidance to $4.75B-$5.00B, reinforcing confidence that the large ag cycle is near a trough rather than a prolonged downturn. Its leadership in precision agriculture, rising adoption of See & Spray and other advanced technologies, and tight dealer inventories across more than 2,000 North American locations support stronger mix, pricing, and a more resilient earnings profile. The company’s scale across PPA, SAT, CF, and FS, plus a global footprint spanning the U.S./Canada, Europe, Latin America, and other regions, gives it multiple avenues for recovery as farm fundamentals and construction demand improve.

Bear case

Deere is exposed to a cluster of cyclical and operational risks that could pressure its core PPA franchise, where farm purchases depend on cash receipts, incomes, crop prices, weather, and inflation in inputs like labor, land, and chemicals. Rising interest rates also threaten affordability and could increase past-due or defaulted loans in John Deere Financial, while supply-chain delays, product quality issues, or weak adoption of precision-agriculture technology could cause canceled orders and softer demand. The negative outlook is further supported by uncertain Construction & Forestry acceptance, macro shocks, and labor or pension obligations, leaving sales and earnings vulnerable even in a market with over 2,000 dealer locations and reach into more than 100 countries.
