The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

KeyCorp is viewed favorably because it has emerged from a successful turnaround with a stronger balance sheet, improved earnings power, and renewed growth momentum, helped materially by the Scotiabank investment. Commercial loan growth remains strong, quarter-to-date deposits have exceeded loan growth by more than $1 billion, and deposit costs are still only a basis point or 2 so far, supporting stable funding and net interest margin expansion. With benign credit trends, a 9.5%-10% CET1 target, and a path to 15%+ ROTCE by 2027, its middle-market focus and expanding fee businesses suggest durable earnings and valuation upside.

Bear case

KeyCorp is exposed to weakening credit quality, interest-rate sensitivity, and a highly regulated, competitive banking environment, all of which can compress net interest income and raise loan-loss provisions. Its middle-market commercial focus and concentration in Ohio, New York, and Washington increase vulnerability to a weaker regional economy, while deposit outflows or earnings pressure could constrain capital and liquidity. With the company’s path toward targeted returns dependent on stronger NIM expansion and earnings recovery, slower-than-expected improvement or integration disappointment could delay fundamental progress.
