The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

RealReal is supported by a differentiated, supply-constrained luxury resale model that benefits when consumers seek value and liquidity, with management citing 80-90% three-month sell-through and 42 hours of average annual user engagement, or 60 hours for buyers who also consign. Its growth case is strengthened by diversified supply channels, stronger luxury manager productivity up 15% YTD, and leadership in the online resale market, which should support the FY26 GMV outlook of $2.42B-$2.47B and revenue of $770MM-$784MM. The company also has improving profitability potential as AI, Athena, and automation reduce cycle times from ~30 minutes to 5-6 minutes, lift Perth Amboy capacity by 35%, and reinforce management’s 200-300 bps annual margin expansion target toward 15-20% Adjusted EBITDA margins by 2030.

Bear case

RealReal is vulnerable to market-share erosion if consumers shift toward competitors that do not depend on pre-authenticated resale, which could leave 2026 sales 10%-15% below estimates. Its business also faces supply-chain fragility in second-hand goods, while higher shipping and merchandising costs could pressure margins and amplify operating leverage. On the balance sheet, the $146.9MM principal amount of 4.25%/8.75% PIK/cash senior secured notes due 2029 becomes callable at par on October 1, 2026, implying refinancing risk that may further constrain financial flexibility.
