The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Shopify is well positioned as a core infrastructure layer for agentic commerce, with its catalog, checkout, POS, payments, and identity capabilities making it a natural beneficiary whether consumers transact directly through AI or use AI mainly for discovery. Its fundamentals are strengthened by broad-based operating momentum, including 2Q26 revenue of $3.6B, 33% constant-currency growth, GMV of $115B, and adjusted operating margins of 17.5%, while Sidekick and AI-driven traffic are already improving merchant outcomes and conversion. The company’s monetization of its existing merchant base, pricing power across Shopify+ and core plans, and expectations for 2027E revenue of $19.5BN and FCF of $4.2BN support a positive long-term outlook.

Bear case

Shopify is facing a negative fundamental setup because its core growth engine depends heavily on merchant expansion in payments and POS solutions, while the company also faces structural competition, potential loss of third-party relationships, and changing global legislation. Although revenue could still grow, the cited slowdown in net new revenue growth to 6% y/y in '27 from a 35% average in '19-26E ex-COVID suggests the business is maturing and the market may be underestimating deceleration in the existing base. Profitability risk also remains meaningful, with cash taxes rising to about 28% of EBIT in 1Q26 from 13% in FY25, alongside succession risk and a dual-class structure that can limit strategic optionality.
