The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Tapestry is supported by Coach’s exceptional momentum, with 4Q26 net sales of $1.877 billion up 9% y/y and operating margin expanding to 19.3%, reflecting strong AURs, new customer acquisition, and reduced promotional activity across North America, Greater China, and Europe. Coach remains the clear earnings engine, generating all of Tapestry’s operating profit and benefiting from durable pricing power, a high-margin direct-to-consumer mix, and roughly 70% of future growth expected from international markets. Although Kate Spade remains a drag, Coach’s broad-based strength, 2 million new customers, and margin leverage underpin confidence in sustained top-line growth, EPS expansion, and robust shareholder returns.

Bear case

Tapestry is exposed to an overdependence on Coach, which generated 86% of fiscal 2026 revenue and all operating profit, leaving the company vulnerable if that brand’s top-line momentum or margin profile slows. Although Coach added more than 2 million new customers in the quarter and nearly 9 million in FY26, the concentration in handbags at 58% of revenue and reliance on China strength make the business sensitive to shifts in consumer demand, tariffs, and competition. Kate Spade remains a drag as revenue declined 7% during the quarter, and if its multi-year turnaround and brand reset do not translate into profitable growth, management may waste capital and time on a lower-quality asset.
