The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Whirlpool is positioned to benefit if North America demand remains stronger for longer, as that would support stickier pricing and preserve margins in its largest revenue-generating region. The upside cases imply meaningful value creation from '26E EBITDA of $896 MM to $953 MM, with EV/EBITDA multiples of 10.0x and 9.5x, suggesting improving operating leverage if execution holds. Its positive outlook is further supported by a sustainability strategy embedded in operations, including lower water- and energy-use products, a net zero impact goal by 2030, and a zero-fatalities safety target across manufacturing sites.

Bear case

Whirlpool is facing a fundamental deterioration in earnings quality as its recent debt refinancing replaced lower-cost euro notes with $2.0 billion of second lien notes at 7.50%-7.875%, lifting annual interest expense by more than $100 million and pushing FY'26E EPS down to $0.04 from $1.41. Weak operating trends are compounding the problem, with lower estimates for Global SDA and Latin America, 1Q'26 Adjusted EBITDA falling 52% year over year to $142 million, and FY'26E free cash flow cut to $183 million, well below the $300+ million guide. Although the refinancing removes near-term maturity risk and the dividend suspension supports liquidity, leverage remains elevated at 6.0x net debt-to-EBITDA in YE'26, leaving limited room for deleveraging absent a stronger housing and demand recovery.
