The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Block is attractive because its Square and Cash App ecosystems are becoming more tightly linked through Neighborhoods, which turns merchant checkout into a proprietary Cash App acquisition funnel while giving sellers free discovery, loyalty, ordering, and marketing tools. Early traction is encouraging, with 30,000 sellers enrolled, roughly 50% of consumers being new or recently inactive on Cash App, and management expecting more meaningful active growth in 2H26 as seller participation scales. The initiative also improves Block’s economics by supporting lower-cost payments at 1% versus about 2.7%, creating richer data on customer behavior, and potentially driving modest gross profit upside and stronger retention across the platform.

Bear case

Block is facing a negative outlook because its growth remains highly exposed to a macroeconomic slowdown that would pressure consumer spending, especially at SMBs, while a better-than-forecast gross payment volume outcome appears dependent on recession avoidance or a soft landing. The competitive fintech landscape is intense, and risks from Apple Tap to Pay, network retention, BNPL regulation, data privacy and security, poor consumer sentiment, and Bitcoin price declines add further uncertainty to both Square and Cash App. Although Square’s 1% merchant fee on Cash App/Neighborhoods payments may be more profitable than standard payments, adoption appears limited, with Cash App users on Neighborhoods representing just 10% of total GPV, suggesting the two-sided network upside is harder to realize than investors may expect.
